Chadâs Poaching Problem
Not all African countries have a poaching problem, but illegal killing of giraffes is a serious issue in Tanzania, Kenya, Chad, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The illegal activity in the central African nation of Chad is an example of the connection between poaching and military activity. Legally in Chad, giraffes are designated as a Category A species that benefits from full protection against any hunting. Yet most of central Africa, including Chad, has been impacted by decades of political strife and economic instability. The Zakouma National Park in southeastern Chad may be one of the last sanctuaries for wildlife in central Africa. The park provides a refuge for the largest surviving giraffe population in Chad.
Since 2003 the ongoing civil war between Sudan and South Sudan has been a humanitarian crisis. Hundreds of thousands of people in Darfur, a region in western Sudan, have been killed. Nearly two million Sudanese have been displaced, and three hundred thousand refugees found safety in Chad.
But Chad isnât immune from the conflict. In Chad, military groups, revolutionists, and terrorists smuggle many weapons. Weapons smuggling is big business worth millions of dollars. To buy weapons and other necessities of war, these militants poach wildlife to sell. Security in the region is weak, and if park guards get in the way of poachers, they are often murdered. Most poachers get away with their crimes.
The Kordofan giraffe (G. c. antiquorum) is native to Chad. At one time, large herdsâas many as five to six thousandâroamed over a vast territory that spreads across Chad and the Central African Republic. Since the mid-1980s, the Kordofan giraffeâs habitat has shrunk to Zakouma National Park, mainly due to illegal hunting and drought throughout the country. The giraffe population has remained steady within the park over the past two decades at nearly one thousand animals.
That number is small when compared to the thousands of giraffes that once roamed across Chad. The African Parks Network, a nongovernmental organization focused on conservation, is working with Chadâs government to manage and protect critical conservation areas, including the Zakouma National Park. So the Kordofanâs numbers are increasing.
